Majical Cloudz

After the memorable late 2012 single “What That Was” from the Turns Turns Turns EP, Montreal duo Majical Cloudz are following up with another intriguingly minimal and emotive song, “Childhood’s End”, from their debut album, Impersonator (out on May 5th on Matador).  Unlike far too many ‘hey-guys’ hipsters-who-sing, Majical Cloudz’s frontman, Devon Welsh, has a [...]

Autre Ne Veut

I saw Brooklyn-based Autre Ne Veut perform in Montreal on February 28th.  After the soulful and extremely impressive opening act by Montreal’s own Majical Cloudz, Autre Ne Veut (a.k.a. Affection / Paradise

Crystal Castles posted their new track “Affection” three days ago.  Give it a listen:   Michelle Williams appears in the peripatetic video for Wild Nothing’s “Paradise”.  Amid the dreamy landscapes, melancholy airports, and fuzzy waterfalls, you’ll hear Williams reciting a passage from Iris Murdoch’s 1975 novel A Word Child.

Nothing Compares 2 U

Los Angeles’ Capital Cities have released an awesome version of “Nothing Compares 2 U”, originally written by Prince for his side project The Family but made famous by Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 cover.  You can download it from the band’s website for free.
